Credit Utilization

The Credit Utilization Dashboard analyzes bachelor’s degree graduates’ transcripts, identifies specific requirements fulfilled by completed courses, and averages student performance across programs and departments. The dashboard also shows the sources of credits fulfilling graduation requirements, including BYU coursework, transfer institutions, or AP/IB and BYU challenge exams. Lastly, the dashboard identifies the most popular courses resulting in unused credits that do not fulfill any graduation requirements.

Definitions

  1. Data are inclusive of all bachelor's degree recipients between AY 2020-21 and AY 2024-25, irrespective of when they began their studies.
  2. Attempted credits are divided into four categories:
    1. Productive - fulfilling GE, religious education, primary major, and elective credits needed to reach 120 total credit hours
    2. Secondary - fulfilling second major or any minor requirements
    3. Unused - earned credits not fulfilling any program requirements
    4. Unproductive - courses resulting in failing D, E, or W grades
  3. Program requirements are fulfilled chronologically. For example, if a student completed two courses that fulfill the same requirement, the first-completed course is counted as productive; the second is considered unused unless the course fulfills another, incomplete program requirement.
  4. Unused credits are defined by two subcategories:
    1. Prior Program - credits that counted toward a previously declared major/minor but are no longer necessary because the student changed programs
    2. No Application - credits that do not fulfill any requirements from any current or previously declared programs
