Definitions
- Census Date: the date BYU takes a snapshot of student enrollment data every year term, typically 7 calendar days after the add/drop deadline.
- Continuing Freshman: an undergraduate student who is not in their first term of enrollment and has earned less than 30 total credits.
- Doctorate: a graduate student who is not in their first graduate student enrollment term and is pursuing a Doctorate (not Law) degree.
- Dual Program Students: a student who is enrolled in an undergraduate and graduate program simultaneously (i.e., MISM program) or in multiple graduate programs. If a graduate student is enrolled in both a Law program and a different graduate degree level, they are included in the Law student counts.
- First Generation Student: a student who indicated neither of their parents completed a 4-year college degree on the most recent undergraduate application (only assigned to undergraduate students).
- Former: an undergraduate student who has previously enrolled at BYU but needed to re-apply to regain registration eligibility.
- International Student: a student who is not a citizen or national of the United States and who is in this country on a visa or temporary basis and does not have the right to remain indefinitely. If a student has a non-student visa type (F-1, J-1), they are still counted as an international student because they meet the IPEDS definition of a Nonresident alien. If a DACA student has a visa type of DACA, they are included in the international student definition. If we do not have a visa type for a student, it is assumed they are citizens.
- Junior: an undergraduate student who has earned 60 or more total credits but less than 90 total credits.
- Law: a graduate student who is not in their first graduate student enrollment term and is pursuing a Law degree.
- Masters: a graduate student who is not in their first graduate student enrollment term and is pursuing a Masters degree.
- Matriculated Day-Eligible Student: a student who has been admitted to BYU as degree-seeking and is currently eligible to enroll in day classes. This is determined for each year term, not overall.
- New Freshman: an undergraduate student who was admitted as a New Freshman and is in their first term of enrollment.
- New Graduate: a newly admitted graduate student in their first graduate student enrollment term.
- New Transfer: an undergraduate student who was admitted as a transfer student and is in their first term of enrollment.
- Race/Ethnicity Unknown: a student who did not select either a racial or ethnic designation.
- Return Missionary No Previous Enrollment: an undergraduate student who was previously admitted, deferred before enrolling, and is now in their first term of enrollment.
- Senior: an undergraduate student who has earned 90 or more total credits but less than 120 total credits.
- Senior +120: an undergraduate student who has earned 120 or more total credits.
- Sophomore: an undergraduate student who has earned 30 or more total credits but less than 60 total credits.
- Total Earned Credits: the number of credits a student has earned at BYU, credits accepted from another institution, credits earned through a BYU challenge exam, or credits earned through AP/IB equivalency.
- Two or More Races: a student who did not identify as Hispanic or Latino but selected two or more other race categories.
