The Aims of a BYU Education

The Aims of a BYU Education Dashboard measures the extent to which departments are meeting the four aims of a BYU education (“A BYU education should be: (1) spiritually strengthening, (2) intellectually enlarging, (3) character building, (4) leading to lifelong learning and service”), based on student survey questions identified as applicable to each aim. Users can view data longitudinally across survey years or through unit-level comparisons between programs, departments, colleges, and the full university. Users can filter by academic year, program, or department based on the user’s access permissions.

Definitions

  1. Data only shows undergraduate departments because of the data sources, so college and university average course ratings presented here differ from those presented in the "Student Course Ratings" dashboard wherein graduate departments are also included.
  2. Composite scores are calculated by summing average numeric scores for each survey question within the category. For example, a category containing two survey questions, the responses of which average 4.3 and 4.5 on a 1-5 point Likert scale, respectively, would be scored 8.8 out of 10 possible points.
  3. The inspiring learning data reported herein are unweighted. NSSE reports apply weights to report percentages of students participating in inspiring learning experiences. Thus, percentages reported in NSSE publications will differ from what is reported here due to NSSE's proprietary weighting scheme.
